Compounding Concern

James Rainport had a twofold compounding concern.

The freed slaves added additional strain to the economy as there were not enough jobs for them, and his restructuring of the Rainport Estate interrupted trade in multiple countries through price increases in exported grain.

His father’s practice of slaving brought reduced labor expenses and lower prices.

Upon his father and brother’s death in the battle for La Longi, James released the slaves and assumed authority over the region reverting to a traditional feudal system of a warrior nobility, church men and peasantry, granting land to his vassals.

James was not inclined to employ the former slaves and the formerly enslaved were not inclined to stick around. James’ father had made the conditions unbearable and there was tension in the region. Thus, there was not enough work to be had in La Longi due to a surplus of available workforce.

The raise in grain prices due to the restructuring infuriated the Carsiolians who benefited in feeding their standing armies at a discount.  As the primary exporter, James would not budge on his stance on slavery or lower his prices.

One of his concerns was recently resolved. A recruiter from Northwich was hiring able bodied workers to mine for iron ore in the northern hills. There was also talk of the Northwich Warrior Society expanding its numbers.

The Carsiolians had sent several delegates to negotiate trade and the talks had deteriorated. There had been ships in harbor, but no grain exported.

The harbor, and more notably the Puking Peasant Inn, was known as a place to hire mercenaries and sailors. Currently, Chandra and his giants, in gilded white armour, longswords and boot knives were in port. The influx of such sellswords was an indication that trouble was brewing.

The king frustrated James Rainport by taking no stance on the concerns. The king’s side of the river to the west was dominated by the wool industry and the Rainport east side was primarily farmland.

This could escalate to war while the king sat on his throne with his alchemist friend spinning wool and manufacturing cheese.

Regardless, James was resolute;

The grain prices would remain the same.

          1. In case it matters, Chandra is the sanskrit word for moon.
            Chandra and company belong to an army which lost a battle, and they were forced to flee.
            Now they yearn to fight for good. They want money, but more than that they want to help the good.
            They are 27 in number.
            When they don’t like someone, they can be expected to crush the head with their mere hands.
