Brothers Campfire on Archaeological Evidence, Participation Trophies

Hello, Benjamin from Brother’s Campfire here!

My Beloved is sleeping so I went for what is typically a short walk for me. 2 miles/3.2 Kilometres was a long way after sitting in the hospital for a while. 😆

I have put on a few pounds as well! I may have to get out and stretch my legs a little bit more.

On Tuesday I will present new paperwork to my Beloved’s doctor to return to work. My supervisor supports my scheduling needs and I do not wish to use all my sick time.

I have been blog hopping a lot in between helping my beloved.

I like information surrounding Biblical history most compelling and found this article. If you are into such things, it is worth the read.

Does archaeological evidence confirm names, dates and places in the Bible?

I spotted this post on Be Thinking by UK apologist Peter S. Williams. (H/T Eric Chabot at Think Apologetics) So let me pick the ones I liked most for this post. Here’s a good one: Jerusalem and The Pool of Bethesda John 5:1-15 describes a pool in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, called Bethesda, surrounded […]

Does archaeological evidence confirm names, dates and places in the Bible?

I also have been reading the news, albeit a lot less, as it is reruns of bad news and trashy celebrities that I don’t even know.

One thing I seldom follow at all is sports, least of all, high school sports. That is, until this article caught my attention.

Connecticut high school suspends basketball coach, apologizes after 92-4 win

Through three quarters, the score was a whopping 80-0

“Jason Kirck, the third-year coach of the Sacred Heart Sharks, has also been suspended for one game as the dominant win did “not align” with the school’s teachings and principles. “

I read this article over and over again, scratching my head. Was it the loser coach? No. It was the winner coach.

So they lost. So what? The article does not say anything about ANY rules being broken. Something is missing here. PLEASE tell me because it doesn’t make sense.

I read a few comments that savage losses aren’t beneficial for children. I am not a child psychologist, but maybe the losing coach could have forfeited the game to save the poor little children. I am not sure what the winning team did wrong with the information available.

I will say, I have had a lot of setbacks in my life, and sometimes it is good to know where you rank in the world and get better. Improve your skills. It took 30 plus interviews to get a job in another department from the one I worked at. Perhaps one day I will show you all the participation awards I got for the years of trying to get good.

One thing I have learned in life is go in it to win it.

There are options for win-win, but for basketball, the win-win is this:

Winner- find new opportunities to try your skills against tougher opponents

Loser- Find new opportunities to improve

I am open to having a mind change on this. For now, wins are still a thing at the Campfire.

In life, there are few “Thanks for coming out” awards”. The no 0 and NHI policies do not teach our kids how to succeed in real life. The only thing the winning coach could have done differently was to put in all his underused players to get playing time. To stop shooting and scoring would have been seen as a pity play and also criticized. In life, contests do not always end in ties. Cheers. Allan

There is no need to wipe the floor with an opposing team in any sport. Point spread only needs to be so wide. Part of the coach role is to teach good sportsmanship – and that includes when you are winning. Imagine being on the team with the score of 4. There is literally no coming back from it, so to then allow your players to continue to score? To what end? After a 50 point spread where are you even going? You won. You then need another 44 points to prove that? Is that even fun? There is no competition in that. After a 50 or 60 point spread are you even cheering? For what? THEY WON. So while I too am against participation trophies, I am also against land blasting a team and calling it ok. It isn’t. And actually there are many league rules against the practice. Which is why this coach got into trouble.

Thanks for dropping by Mom of Three Gentlemen!

I am not familiar with the rules. If the coach broke rules, I am on the same page with his suspension. If the game has been won, why did they continue playing? Why did the other side not forfeit?
There are so many questions unanswered in the article for the uneducated in the sport.

One of the things Allan commented on is the winning team could have given less skilled players time on the court.

I guess my overall question is, if I was coaching a team and the other team was hopelessly losing, what would the best approach be?

Great Comment! I wait to hear more on this!

I am curious as to what the coach should have done? What would you do as a coach?
Shouldn’t the losing coach have just called a forfeit rather than letting this happen to their players? Later on they could question if the teams need to be put into different leagues. My high school football team had not won a game in years and years until somebody moved the big schools and smaller schools around.

If my team was at the point of demoralizing the other team, I would encourage the players to just pass the ball, or to pass 6 times before scoring no matter what (That is actually a rule in Basketball and Soccer in NY depending on the league when the spread reaches a certain point). The coaches should have spoken with one another. The winning coach should have addressed his team accordingly (hold off on goals, or only score after “x” amt. of passes). And yes if there is that much of a score disparity I would guess that the players were hand picked ( and it’s a ringer team) or that the team was in the wrong league. Either way that point spread is just obnoxious and serves no one. least of all any of the players.

Thanks for your perspective, Mother of Three Gentleman!

These are my thoughts at the moment and I do not have to be right. I can be swayed. I want you to know that I have the utmost respect for you, and your perspective. Also know, you get the last word on this thread. 🏀

          Here is my take:

If handicapping your team after a point spread is the rules, that is ok by me. The article doesn’t state that, and I am an outsider. Can the losing coach forfeit the game?

In real life, I obnoxiously was behind in the point spread by 30 plus interviews for just about any job outside my department, and no supervisors intervened to handicap the others interviewing. I had no idea I was out of my league, but the supervisors knew and did not care to tell me.

When I finally landed my current job, I had to fight tooth and nail for it in industry research, presentation, and a number of skill sets. Battle-scarred and hungry for victory, I was selected over capable candidates, but it wasn’t handed to me. I have to prove my worth every day to maintain my position.

The losing coach could have forfeited the game. 🏀
My supervisors could have told me I wasn’t ready. 📖

I wonder what values we teach our kids in all of this.
To be beaten senseless in a game is senseless.
Handicapping a winning team puts a governor on excellence.
The losing coach forfeiting has merit.

          Those are my thoughts.
I intend to have an even-handed conversation and I will leave you with the last word.

Mother of Three Gents, there are S’mores, hot chocolate, and lots of entertainment here at the Campfire. Know I appreciate you and your support for my family during these trying times! 🤠🔥

I agree with Allan. Especially if the coach did rotate all of his players, even the Herbies, in to play some. What does the school teach that the coach didn’t align with? And he’s also right, if they would have stood around and let the other team win that would have been criticized as well.

If I were on the losing team, I would hope to play it out to the bitter end. I would give up the court when they pried my sneakers from my sweaty, jersied torso. 🤠🔥🏀

I think if a game has come to a point of no return, it should be ended. There is so much in the article left unsaid.

Without a loser there wouldn’t be a winner. Both sides should learn from it because winners won’t win forever.
