The Sign From Above Brothers Campfire

Hello, Benjamin from Brothers Campfire here!

Two days ago, a wheelchair-bound inmate wheeled toward me with several pictures. Telling a quick story, he showed me a caterpillar, a cacoon, and a butterfly and gave a testimony of how he used to take and after he found Jesus he died out to his old ways and is a new creature.

I was touched by his sincerity, but being a Correctional Officer in a hard environment , I stated,”yeah, well I am the same way but more like a frog. ” We laughed and parted ways.

Inside, I thought about how it was a little true.

Frogs are ground dwelling, muddy amphibians that eat undesirables.

While frogs are useful,

They aren’t pollinating pleasantry.

If your brain can handle it, fastforward to yesterday.

Yesterday, I was stopped by inmates, a large handful of them.

Ha Ha! Not really. They were very chill.

A butterfly had landed on the back of my shirt collar and I was unaware.

An inmate carefully scooped it off and it fluttered around and landed on my left index finger.

It was way cool.

The inmates thought maybe it could not fly, but I said “nah, its all good, he can fly, ” and as I flicked my hand in the air, it flew off.

One of the men, a practicing Buddhist was the most in awe and called it a sign.

Was it a sign from above? It could have been.

Ten minutes prior,I had just put floral lotion on my hands after using the restroom thinking it was soap.

It landed on your collar first — that wasn’t floral scented, right? We as fetal water-dwellers turned into air-breathers, or those earth-crawlers turned into winged fliers, and certainly wiggly swimmers turned into tail-less now-legged hoppers, and perhaps (and why not) some incarcerateds re/turning to the better path — to me, these and all transformations are miraculous, they are of God. Sometimes, maybe He just says “hello” in a way everyone can understand.

I always call butterflies angels. It’s kind of a joke, but it’s also not. When my husband and I were married, a pair of white butterflies fluttered around us when we were saying our vows. That has to be angels, right? 😆
