Brothers Campfire Duck Duck Goose 5/19/2020

Hello Friends! Welcome to the Campfire at Willow Manor Urban Farm!

It has felt like ducky day care!

I feel responsible for ensuring that my duck charges are not only well fed but educated.

The ducks were placed outside under my watchful eye yesterday. Opportunist birds will kill and eat them. In fact, a turkey buzzard waited patiently in the sky, for a wrong move on my part.

They apparently only scavenge, but I was taking no chances.

Me giving them lawn clippings to try.

So, I did multiple things to get my birds acclimated. I reaaranged the “water park” bricks so they would have to solve how to get out of the water after swimming.

I noticed with my last, donated flock that the birds had to be shown how to get in and out of some water sources and I do not believe that is necessary if you help them think at a young age.

Next on my list was foraging. According to the internet, Khaki Campbells are excellent foragers. I placed dandilion, weeds, and grass clippings in the water so they could try their hand at it. I ensured crumble was available all day to ensure they had the caloric intake necessary for all of the new exploration and adventure.

After a couple hours of this, it was time for the big pool. They did swimmingly well in adjusting to the new environment, just what I am looking for.

I steadily increased the difficulty of the brick arraignment so the birds would need to leap out of the water to get on dry land. My little charges seemed to make a game out of it and out do eachother. I am greatful that they found it entertaining as it helps muscular development in the hip area.

The introduction to Trumpet went surprisingly well. In the picture above, you can see her in the distance taking an afternoon soak. I do not have pictures of the introduction as I was justifiably fearful she would bite them and I wanted to be prepared to act.

Trumpet was quite motherly, and cried for them when I took them out of the pool. I am glad she wants them around.

After our nifty adventures, I put them to bed. They appeared relieved at the familiar surroundings and also a little disappointed. Intuition and reading thier body language tells me this. It is not science, but I have noticed that sometimes animals react in ways we can understand.

A nice clean home. Wont last long!

If you enjoy these reads about the ducklings, let me know in the comments below. If it is getting old, let me know as well! I am very excited about them.

Cassa Bassa, I did not forget about a foraging video. Thank you for the suggestion!

One looks a little off put. The were cupped in my hands around my shirt so they were probably fine. I usually transport two at a time. Thank you for the concern. I care about my little friends as well.

They are pretty durable for their small stature. They are much more so than baby chickens.
The big yellow baby goose is actually a lot more fragile it seems. I move him with a lot of care.
I do try to handle them all carefully though!🤠🔥

Ok really is that so? I got to know alot about these cute cute beings. It is really very beautiful. They are so cute, little, I saw all the pictures in which they are swimming in the water, taking a bath, it is really amazing. I like very little beings like this. Hopefully we will get to see such beautiful beautiful pictures again and again and also get a chance to know about them.

Thank you, I like them as well! I am nor some sort of animal whisperer, some things are obvious if one were to take the time to observe. For instance, in the picture where I am holding four ducks, one does not look happy. I am sure you can point it out. I would propose that observation is a wonderful gift! Thank you for the comment, Anya! Thanks for stopping by the Campfire today!

I am tired and it is only Wednesday here. Do you have driver’s licences over there?

I like all of your urban farming adventures, anecdotes, and other life’s victories and etc. I also want to know what is going on with LaLongi, Northwich, and all of the characters. Perhaps you could switch off between the ongoing story, which I have followed from the beginning, and your life adventures, which are always interesting, not just the farm stuff but the other things going on as well. Every other day one or the other? With important breaking news as it happens on either day.

    So cute!
    Do they race?
Like you make them stand in a line and put food in the distance. That would be fun

I also strongly believe in listening to your intuition with animals… “use the Force, Luke.”
