Carolina Reapers Explored By The Campfire

Hello, Benjamin from Brother’s Campfire here!

The other day, I wrote about a culinary delight we partake of here at the Campfire.

Brother’s Campfire Brings The Heat

I discovered I was not alone in these undertakings!

.

So, in follow-up, the Thirteen Year Veteran of Life and I tried a small portion of the world’s hottest peppers in the raw state. These are the Scorpion Pepper and the Carolina Reaper.

Scorpion Pepper and Carolina Reaper

We are both aware of what a hot pepper can do to the digestive system so we elected not to be too stupid.

My son did not have much of a taste reaction other than the normal burning sensation and a runny nose. Immediately he had a lasting stomach ache, so I am glad we made smart choices in portions. I see we are not the only ones.

For me, exposure to capsicum is more than a friendly rivalry with my son, who is mostly unaffected from the neck up.

Herb Thiel from Haps with Herb had this to say:

Well spoken.

We use pepper spray as a tool in the prison and I need to function effectively when it is deployed so I expose myself to peppers fairly often. Usually, it is by consumption.

Pepper Spray?

Because it was a special occasion, ( I am not sure why) I did choose to rub diced portions of the Carolina Reaper all over my hands. They swelled and burned immediately, but I did not blister.

Good For Arthritis?

Inevitably, I touched my face and had to use the restroom. It doesn’t feel that great.

So, If you ever want to feel like red ants are biting you all over for several hours, go ahead and give it a whirl. Even after washing my hands thoroughly, my body continued to cook.

We did cook the peppers into a sauce but let me clarify; The flavor just isn’t there for us.

They are spicy, but the Carolina Reaper, a science experiment by Ed Currie, is a novelty bred exclusively for the heat or Scoville unit and not for taste.

That said, we low simmered onion, garlic, lime, and the peppers.

My reaction to slicing onions was more to write home about than eating a bit of Reaper. I know it would have been worse had I eaten more, but I was expecting this from peppers, not onion.

The only thing I would have changed is squeezing the lime over including the peels. It imparted a bitter taste.

Blurry. The Camera Knew Better Than To Get Too Close.

The steam that this concoction gave off made the nose run, caused coughing, and burned the eyes.

Like I stated above, the spice of the pepper overwhelmed everything but the bitterness of the lime peel. It literally tasted like lava death. (Wait… That is figuratively)

We manned up and tried it, and in small portions could tolerate it. I think because we handle spicy on a regular basis, it was a little anti-climactic. I mean, after a certain point, fire is fire, unless…. It’s Brother’s Campfire

Having worked with spicy a fair bit was a big influence on quantity consumed. Consumption of spicy works both ways! 🤠🔥🌶🌶🌶🌶 💩

They’re hot, alright. But now the next generation has a story to share and attempt 🙂 And kudos to you and the Thirteen Year Veteran for playing it on the safe side. People like to say “Try everything once” but always leave out “within reason.”

I like a nice bit smoky jalapeno or habanero in my food from time to time, but… And, holy moly, what’s with the guy eating burning wood?!

Lol hahahaaaaa….lava death! I can smell the bitterness through your post. Good to know about the flavor. Sounds nice for an experience but I’ll take taste over heat any day of the week! Well, maybe with the heat.

I love hot, spicy foods, but as I have gotten older, my stomach can’t tolerate them anymore. Feels like strong acid dumped my stomach. Lord, how I miss Mexican food covered with hot picante sauce.

My digestive system is always the first to suffer—food, stress, everything affects it.

I received an email from your daughter saying (I paraphrase), “My dad bought the spiciest pepper in the world and touched it and now he is getting a taste of it without even eating it!”

I had a bad experience with habanero when working in a restaurant that even after wearing gloves, and prewashing my hands taking a piss was still quite painful. I might be slightly masochistic but you my friend are completely…I don’t think I ever met anyone who rubbed their hands on purpose with a hot pepper just analyze the reaction. You are one hell of a 🔥🌶️🥜

Hahaha you are braver than me!!

I am a wimp… except when I had Covid and couldn’t smell or taste then I was all about these things while I had the chance 😄😄✌️the bonus of Covid lol – I ate things normally I would never touch!! So that was fun for a minute lol

But yeah once when I was maybe 7 or 8 … I was eating pretzels 🥨 while my parents cooking – they were using some kind of hot pepper and one piece got on one of my pretzels and I couldn’t handle it / made me cry and my aunt was a nurse and said stick a piece of white bread in my mouth and suddenly the heat was gone ❤️ thank god

But normally nope I am wuss lol ✌️

I can handle small heat but not massive heat

Herb is always so on point.
I used to love spicy but I haven’t been eating much of it lately so I think my tolerance is pretty low. Kudos to you for playing it smart with the portion control and turning it into a sauce.

Seriously, I am thinking that three run-ins with covid have killed my taste buds considerably, but it has not affected my common sense!
