Brothers Campfire A Time Of Thankfulness

Hello, Benjamin from Brother’s Campfire here wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Today we gather as a family in Thanksgiving for all the great things God has done for us.

Thanksgiving 2019

Advertising has commercialized the occasion and influencers are calling today a day of mourning, but not here at the Campfire. We stand solid in how we express thankfulness and come together as a family.

I wonder if we are in the days described in the Bible when I look around at the world around me.

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Romans 1:21 KJV

We at the Campfire are Thankful!

In short, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our blessings, and let our Maker know of our gratefullness.

In my opinion, a spirit of thankfulness transcends tradition, culture, and religion. Whether you participate or not, I would like you know I appreciate each and every one of you that visits the Campfire. I am thankful knowing I have the best community of readers and contributors on Earth! You all are amazing!

We have a few deep rooted traditions in our family. For many years, It was my responsibility to make the turkey. I would go with my parents and we would “hunt” for the perfect one at the grocery store. I have prepared the turkey for somewhere around 25 years now.

I have passed this responsibility to a 12 year veteran of life, and he takes the honor very seriously.

In fact, we practice beforehand to get everything just right.

A “Test Batch” Of homemade stuffing seasoned with herbs from our garden.

Another tradition we hold is a poem is readby world renowned blogger Herb Thiel titled When Father Carves The Duck.

Thanksgiving 2018

When Father Carves the Duck
by Ernest Vincent Wright

We all look on with anxious eyes
When Father carves the duck
And mother almost always sighs
When Father carves the duck
Then all of us prepare to rise
And hold our bibs before our eyes
And be prepared for some surprise
When Father carves the duck.

He braces up and grabs a fork
Wheneer he carves a duck
And wont allow a soul to talk
Until he’s carved the duck.
The fork is jabbed into the sides
Across the breast the knife he slide
While every careful person hides
From flying chips of duck.

The platters always sure to slip
When Father carves a duck.
And how it makes the dishes skip!
Potatoes fly amuck!
The squash and cabbage leap in space
We get some gravy in our face
And Father mutters Hindu grace
Wheneer he carves a duck.

We then have learned to walk around
the dining room and pluck
From off the windowsills and walls
Our share of Father’s duck
While Father growls and blows and jaws
And swears the knife was full of flaws
And Mother laughs at him because
He couldn’t carve a duck.

I hope you enjoyed the poetry! Here it is as read by Herb Thiel himself!

Happy Thanksgiving. The family meal is certainly the strongest tradition on this date. May Thanksgiving bring you and your family the gratification of a successful year despite the hardships.

No matter what is going on in the world and in 2020, we can all take time to give thanks. We may all think we have it bad, but that is the problem….we are thinking of ourselves, instead of others. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving Day, however you celebrated. Allan

No holiday for us up here in Canada, as we celebrate Thanksgiving in October. Still a great week, with plenty to do, enough to eat, a warm place to live and lots of friends and relatives to phone and Skype with. Also, my wife’s birthday on Sunday, so we will celebrate then, for sure, not in a restaurant, but with take out. Allan

I am so thankful to be a part of this family. When my kids were at home still I would have each of my five children invite one or two friends that family didn’t celebrate. We would slide the long dining room table and my large fold up table together, side by side not length. Some sat on the radiator, folding chairs, dining room chairs and computer chairs. 24 pound bird gone by the end. Thank you again.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for the family God has given me. So many precious moments with precious people. Thanksgiving and Christmas Day fellowship, other holiday fellowship, game nights, hospital visits with prayer time and goodbyes, birthdays with homemade fireworks, baby showers, caring for babies/grand babies, praying as one for needs, worship time….God is good!

Love the poem and the tradition. The question is just how big was said duck? The ducks I’ve seen usually aren’t that big and frankly I would just rip it into pieces. But that’s just me. I’ very the whole bathroom issue in the beginning was settled in accordance with established norms.

Thanks for sharing and laugh always

The ducks I have are pretty small. Perhaps father needed a left handed knife or something.

Societal norms are something we look to adhere to here at the Campfire!

Thank you for stoping by! I see you subscribed to my email notification list! Thank you for the support!
