Louds Cabin Trail, Colorado Springs

Hello, Benjamin from Brother’s Campfire here!

Louds Cabin is a moderate-difficulty trail near downtown Colorado Springs. It is approximately a 6 miles round trip.

Three years ago, for Valentine’s day we took this trail, winter gear in tow and Yak Traks on our feet.

The journey started off ok. It was cold, but nothing we hadn’t seen before.

Louds Cabin has several small waterfalls, but we didn’t see any. It was just too frozen.

The cabin was a little hard to find because no one had been there after it had snowed, ant the trail was poorly marked. We navigated by satellite via All Trails to find it.

It doesn’t look like much, but Mr. Loud was no slouch. I wasn’t there, but I read that He worked with a guy named Tesla and organized books in our local library. As a side note, he was an astronomer and founded the Colorado Meteorological Association. It must have been a long ride to work on his horse.

We ate pork rinds and summer sausage, cooked some ramen and headed back. We had a short time to pick our kids up from school.

Heading back, both of my Yak Tracks broke. My beloved offered me one of hers, but I declined as I tend to be much more sure-footed. I did borrow one of her trek poles.

Online Trail guides recommend the route be traveled between March and December and with good reason; the trail goes from moderate to potentially deadly.

All the sunshine had melted the top part of the snow and a change in weather had refrozen it.

The path down was a sheet of ice.

When we cane to a clearing with cell phone service, we arraigned for our children to be picked up. It took us hours to descend.

Niave us when we started the Louds Cabin Trail

We became exhausted and considered pitching a tent and building a fire for the night. Descending ice without crampons is no joke. (Crampons are like an upgrade to Yak Tracks)

Neither me or my Beloved went to recess growing up. Quite simply, we don’t play when it comes to adventure. We made our way down and went home to change clothes. It was time for our Valentine’s date!

Our first stop was a sporting goods store. In my tie and her fancy dress, the associates treated us like inexperienced city slickers. We embraced every minute and dumped loads of questions on them.

Finally, we went to a fine dining establishment and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

If you would like to read a little more about Loud’s Cabin, here are a few pages I read on the topic.

Seriously Bro, the fact you made it safely down that ice covered nightmare albeit in hours time is impressive. Did your beloved knit her hat ?

Not my favorite for sure, but if I remember correctly, she was on a Keto diet at the time .
